Chinchilla News PDF  | Print |

14 December 2007

 Hello

I can't believe how time flies and that the 12 chinchillas I imported from the USA from chinchillas.com have been in the country for more than 2 months! They have all settled in nicely and have adjusted to living in "Africa". Their different personalities have started to come out and I'm really enjoying their different antics. My black velvet male loves music and will come out of his nesting box during the day to listen to the music. They all seem to enjoy the music and will stop to listen. Hopefully within the next 6 weeks the kits will start making their arrivals, watch this space for photos!

Hello,

how time flies it seems Christmas was last week and yet we are almost in February again.  I can't believe the chinchillas I imported have been in the Country more than 5 months. I'm counting the days until the arrival of the new kits. I'm grateful for the cool rainy weather that we are having at present. It helps when there is no air conditioning because of "load shedding" that the chinchillas don't have to contend with hot weather. It boggles the mind that in this modern day and age we are reverting back to the dark ages!!!!! Enough of that frustrating topic, keep an eye out for the animal talk magazine in April there will be an article that a friend and I have written regarding the care of chinchillas. Till next time...............

Hello,

Well 6 weeks has passed and still no kits I guess patience is called for. I'm just so excited about the arrival of the new kits and can't wait to see the different colours. I'm glad I'm not importing chinchillas this year as the rand dollar exchange rate is high and the chinchillas have really gone up in price. Last year a Royal Persian Angora sold for $2000 and now they are going for $3000 to $4000 I really bought them just in time and was very lucky to get 3 as they are very scarce. Hopefully the next time I have news it will be to announce the arrival of some of the kits.

Till next time....

Hello

Great was my exitement when I discovered 2 babies in my ebony and tan chinchilla's night box. The ebony (Zorro) is the Dad and the tan (Coco) is the Mom. They have managed to duplicate themselves and produced a tan and an ebony baby. These are my first babies from my imported stock that arrived in October last year. Hopefully this causes a chain reaction and the other 5 imported females will start delivering their kits soon. As soon as the babies venture out of the nest box I'll take some photos so watch this space.

Till next time ......

Hello

My news is bitter sweet firstly, I lost my tan baby yesterday but on the sweet side shortly afterwards the first Royal Persian Angora was born in South Africa! The other angoras born to Mooi Kloof Chinchillas were carriers. I have been blessed with twins from my grey RPA male Leo and my white mosaic female Cleo. The babies are both little girls but one is a angora carrier and the other one with longer hair is the RPA chinchilla. At present both are grey but there is also a touch of white so maybe they will later turn into white mosaics (only time will tell). The other babies should all be making their arrivals and I just can't wait to see the different colour combinations.

Hello

No new additions to the nursery at this stage and I must admit it is getting hard to wait so long for new babies. There are still 3 imported females to give birth and they seem to be taking forever. I can't wait to see what colour combinations will be born but at this stage it feels like I'm waiting for elephants to deliver. I just hope the wait will be worth it in the end. My baby black ebony girl, Midnight has gone to live with my friend Corlet and hopefully one day will deliver some stunning black ebonies. The other babies are all doing great and almost ready to be separated from their Moms they will all be staying.

I have 2 standard boys from my local beige pair who will be going to live with Sybil very soon and I know she can't wait any longer for them.

Till next time...

Hello

Well thanks to copper thieves we have been without telephone lines for some time. This has been a great frustration because that means no INTERNET and not e-mails. We have now resorted to wireless at quite a cost I might add because we have very poor signal in our area. It was just something we had to do and at least we don't have to worry about copper thieves now!

The chinchillas are all doing great and I should start seeing some new babies in the near future. With summer approaching the airconditioner is going to be working overtime again. Please remember not to house your chinchillas outdoors. Their coats are extremely thick and the South African weather is far too hot for them to be housed outside. Besides what interaction will they be getting with you if housed outside. Remember the more attention they get the tamer they become. Check out the chinchillas for sale section I have 1 beige chinchilla for sale.

 Hello

Well time flies and it's been ages since I updated my site but I've been busy uploading items for the online shop which is still growing. I can't believe we are in the last month of 2008 this year has rushed by. I trust if you are going away that your pets are all taken care of. This time of year so many animals end up in shelters etc. it's simply heartbreaking.

Some new babies have made their arrival for the first time ever I have triplets from Lucy. Two little girls  and a boy all healthy and all beige. I was worried that their mommy would'nt cope with 3 babies but she has done great and they are all healthy. I had visions of having to supplement their feed but luckily they have a great mommy.

Till next time........

Hello

Sorry no news for some time but things have been hectic and I've had server problems. On a sad note I lost my pink white male that I bred myself in a horrific way. He unfortunately managed to climb into the cage above his cage and ended up in a cage with my Angora Standard male and my predominantely white female who have 2 mosaic angora babies. Needless to say the female ripped him to shreds and left him for dead. It was an awful sight and he unfortunately died on the way to the vet. I rest my case that the female chinchillas can be extremely aggressive to other chins. For this reason I breed with pairs and not colonies. I'm not saying it is wrong to put 1 male with 3 females but expect to pick up a problem at some stage. Often when one of the females has a litter the other females can become aggressive towards the kits and the mother. I know of a few people who have found a chinchilla ripped to shreds when breeding in colonies.

I have never had a problem like this but this was an unfortunate accident and he was at the wrong place at the wrong time. The only good thing that come out of this was the autopsy that the vet performed. Most web sites state that chinchillas do not have a gall bladder so I saw this as the perfect opportunity to find out. Well they do have a tiny tiny little gall bladder which we cut open and bile come out of it. Below is a picture of the tiny gall bladder I hope this is proof enough that chinchillas do have gall bladders.

Hello

At last new babies have been born. My standard grey Angora carrier had a litter of 3 babies the father is Black Magic my Black Velvet Angora. All the babies are little girls and as sweet as can be. I'm receiving more and more orders for chinchilla food on my online shop which means more and more people are feeding their chins correctly. If only more people would realize the benefits of feeding the correct food to their chins. Feeding the correct food will definitely prolonge the life of your chin and ensure that your chin does not encounter any digestive problems.

I often get asked if chinchillas make good pets well like all pets the more attention and love they receive the more you will receive in return. Chinchillas can make wonderful, entertaining and loving pets if treated with love and gentleness.

Till next time..... (seems someone else has coined my phrase!)

Hello

Seems a baby boom has started another RPA carrier was born today a little white mosaic male. I just love the white mosaic chins they are like a lucky packet one never knows what markings they will have till they are much older. Their coats seem to change all the time. I sold a chin the other day and stated that it looked as if it would have a dot on its head at that stage the dot was not very visible but having more experience in this area I noticed the dark hairs on her head and was sure she would have a dot develop later on. I was accused of selling the person the wrong chinchilla as they couldn't see the dot .... well I'm pleased to announce recent photos have confirmed a lovely dark spot developing on her head!!! I have had mosaic chins born grey with white tips on their tails and within a few weeks have slowly turned white mosaic with all traces of grey disappearing.
